Melbourne Regatta Report December 4-5, 2004. Wickham Park Lake, no doubt the gem of Florida, white sand launching beach and bottom, no pollution or weeds crystal-clear water and of course beautiful warm and sunny skies. After the skippers meeting, the sailors and all in attendance sang the National Anthem. Twenty-four sailors from clubs as far north as Maryland dotted the Racing area. Adam Rottmann and Bob Montanari with a large number of assistants from the Space Coast Model Sailing Club did a fantastic job with the race management. Day one provided acceptable winds in the morning. Late afternoon winds accelerated to 10-15 mph causing boats with A-Rigs to become difficult to control. The sailing was very close all day with many different skippers winning heats. Day two started with really great wind conditions providing the best racing possible. RD Adam Rottmann set a long weather leg requiring 4 to 6 tacks to make the first mark and a wing mark left the skippers with a very long run. It all made for some exciting racing. The protest chairman and his committee took care of all legal matters on and off the water. Socially the event was a success; the party at Chowders Restaurant was 50 strong and awesome. Traditions were upheld in the style of great food, new friendships made and old friendships renewed and to top it all, we all sang happy birthday to the regatta chairman, Tony DiMarzio with a piece of a beautiful birthday cake. No one could believe that Tony was 80. Many thanks to the Space Coast Model Sailing Club, the RDs, Mark Judges, Scorers, Committees, Ground Crews, Food Servers and especially Dana and Peggy Jones. Reichard Kahle wins the regatta and John Bottensek brings the Florida Championship back to Florida. Results
