"Yankee Go Home" Regatta, Naples MYC
Kahle and Pfiel on top of the fleets
By Bud Cassidy, April 28 & 29, 2007

The weather couldn’t have been more perfect on Island Walk, in Naples, Florida this year. Entrants arrived early on Saturday to an overcast sky. It soon cleared to light westerly winds, which built to a good sailing breeze by the start of A or Gold fleet at 10:00 am.

Racing continued through the day until 3:30 pm with the Gold fleet of 16 boats completing 12 races. The B or Silver fleet of 15 boats completed 10 heats. Reichard Kahle held the lead, followed by Jack Wubbe, Mike Zellanack, and Harry Strunk. The Silver Fleet was led by Jack Ward, followed by Dick Hedderick, Fred Pfiel, and Dave Harrington.

In the evening, we all adjourned to Spanky’s Speak’Easy Restaurant for cocktails, dinner, and bragging. Some dined in the screened-in porch area, while others sat outside on rocking picnic benches. The weather was perfect overlooking a canal. A well trained alligator and many turtles knew exactly what time to swim up to the bank for scraps from our dinner.

Sunday morning brought in a bright sun and a moderate early breeze that held throughout the morning. It allowed for the Golds to get in 4 more races before quiting time for a total of 16 for the regatta. Silver got in 4 heats for a total of 14 for the weekend.

Reicherd Kahle, again, kept a solid first in the Gold. One of our own, Jack Wubbe, came in second to John Bottensek who was just1 point behind in third, and Baron Bremer held onto fourth.

Fred Pfiel turned on the afterburners and came out with a deserved first in Silver, followed closely by Naples' Dick Hedderick in second, and Jack Ward in third. Dick Reinke took fourth.

EC12-scribed trophies were presented to all of the above with green chevrons going to the first three Gold finishers.

My heartfelt thanks goes to all the hard-working volunteers who made this regatta a success.

All in all, we had a great weekend on the Pond. We hope to see everyone back next year.
