"Yankee Go Home" Regatta, Naples MYC
Bremer and Ward take home top honors
April 26 & 27, 2008
by Bud Cassidy, Race Dictator

Clear blue skies and balmy weather greeted entrants Saturday morning at the Island Walk Resort like venue.

Winds were light and variable from the southeast, which made the windward leeward course selection difficult. Working with what we had, racing started at 10:00 a.m. and continued until 3:30. While wind direction remained a problem throughout the day, 10 races were competed in the Golf fleet and 8 in the Silver.

On top of the Gold fleet for the day were Baron Bremer, Alan Perkins, Joe Walter, and Jack Wubbe in that order. Silver leaders were Bud Elder, Martin Raishbrook, Jack Ward, and Jim Pardee.

Saturday night all adjourned to Spanky’s “Speak Easy” for food, drinks and lots of tall tale swapping. The high light of the evening was the celebration of Joe Walter’s five-year old daughter, Mary Michael’s birthday. There was cake for all and a robust singing of happy birthday.

Sunday the wind gods did it again with more light air from the southeast. Course setting was a challenge, in fact so much so that yours truly earned the title change from “Race Director” to “Race Dictator.”

The Gold fleet got in 16 total races for the weekend, while the Silver fleet completed 14. The top honors and winners of the beautiful half hull model trophies were Baron Bremer, Joe Walter, Alan Perkins, and Tony Rieck in the Gold fleet and Jack Ward, Bud Elder, Dick Reinke, and Martin Raishbrook in Silver in that order.

After dropping into the Silver fleet for one regatta, Jack, Bud, and Dick return to the Gold fleet as automatics in the next regatta in Orlando.

My thanks to the hard working Naples volunteers who made a great weekend possible and we’re looking forward to all returning next year.
