Naples Regatta Report
2010 National champion Bremer starts new season with win, Steacy wins in silver fleet

By Bud Cassidy

The Naples Regatta was held at The Vineyards’ pond located behind the Physician Regional Hospital. The site is very convenient for launching and provides good viewing for spectators as the parking and set-up area are within a few feet of the pond. Trees are somewhat of an obstruction for racers but fortunately no one walked into one so no injuries occurred.

Saturday morning saw high 40-degree weather, which fortunately improved to the low 70s by the day’s end. Twenty-eight entrants were split into two fleets using the new modified Two-fleet system. This resulted in the gold fleet consisting of 16 boats while the silver fleet contained 12. Racing got started with gold leading off at 10:00 AM in a light 3-5 mph breeze out of the NE. Racing continued through the day with this wind pattern causing some mark-rounding congestion. This called for good skills by all. At the end of the day, 10 races had been completed by both fleets. Actually, 11 races were sailed by the gold fleet but due to an unfortunate scoring error, one race had to he resailed. Results for the day were: Gold—1 Bremer; 2 Bottensek; 3 Perkins. Silver—1 Steacy; 2 Elder; 3 Miller. Saturday evening, all gathered at Spankies Speak Easy’ Restaurant, a fun place with an outdoor screened patio warmed by heaters. By the noise level it was apparent a good time was had by all.

Sunday began as another bright, sunny, and cool morning. The wind, lighter than Saturday, unsettled veering from NE to NW. Races got off at 9:30, using the same course as Saturday. After a couple of races, the wind shifted, making a change of course necessary and the day continued with light air and course changes between NE and NW directions. Just squeezing in the final silver race starting at 3:24 a total of 6 races for the day were Completed making a total of 16 for each fleet allowing for two throw outs. (help!)

Final results for the top three of each fleet were unchanged from Saturday.
The top 5 of both fleets were:
Gold:  1 Bremer, 2 Perkins, 3 Bottensek, 4 Wubbe, 5 Hedderick
Silver:  1 Steacy, 2 Elder, 3 Miller, 4 Cromie, 5 Novak
Ancient Mariner award:  Frankie Novak
Last in fleet certificate and free entry in next year’s Naples Regatta went to newcomer, Herb Mitten.

A big thanks goes to all my helpers on the race committee. I can’t do this with out you.
