Naples "New Year Regatta" Report The Naples New Year Regatta was the 3rd Regatta in the Florida EC-12 series. 15 skippers participated and the regatta was sailed as a single fleet. The weather did not co-operate this year. Skippers were greeted Saturday morning with driving rain and wind. However, after a one hour delay, the sky cleared and skippers got to sail three races with A rigs. Then a second wave of rain, high winds and lightening drove everyone to their cars. As soon as the lightening "all clear" siren sounded, we were back to racing with A rigs. By mid afternoon, the West wind had built considerably and skippers were given a break to change down to B rigs. 12 races were completed on Saturday. Sunday dawned with a chilly 45 degrees and a blustery NNE wind 10-15 with gusts to 25. But no rain! Skippers were moved to the opposite side of the lake to provide a good course with the Northerly. The B rigs were all out as well as a couple of C rigs. Racing was "exciting" with lots of nose dives and broaches downwind. Another 12 races were completed on Sunday. Dick Hedderick sailed very consistently and took first place. Dick's boat is ten years old and was using the original Rod Carr B rig sails. Ted Flack was second, Doc Greer third. Earnan Scavella fourth, and Jack Ward fifth. The skippers are shown below right to left, with RD Chuck Weaver at the extreme right. L-R: Jack Ward 5th, Earnan Scavella 4th, Robert Greer 3rd, Ted Flack 2nd, Dick Hedderick 1st, Chuck Weaver RD.
