Palm Beach Gardens Valentine's
Regatta Report
by Dick Reinke, Race Director
Saturday
33 boats racing with eight races for A-fleet (Gold) and B-fleet (Silver).
Wind: What direction is it now? All over. Frustrating day for R/D and
sailors. Did the best with what we had to work with as far a wind direction.
All fleets tested their light air skills all over the course. On Saturday
afternoon the wind settled into a southeast pattern that dictated a long
one-tack beat to the weather mark. Then a reach back up the course to
the leeward mark. Not much sailing skill involved to play follow the leader.
We even saw some races with boats doing a beat, reach and downwind all
in one leg.
At the end of racing on Saturday, with one throw out, in the Gold fleet
Baron Bremer was 1st with 19 points followed by Bob Greer in 2nd with
29 points, and Joe Walter in 3rd with 42 points. In the Silver fleet Carter
Cain was 1st with 19 points followed by Martin Raishbrook in 2nd with
21 points, and Tom Germer in 3rd with 26 points.
Weather: warm followed by hot. Racing ended around 3:30 pm. soon followed
by a big down pour of rain in the local area.
Food committee: outstanding food selections of coffee, pastries, muffins,
donut holes, bananas and apples for breakfast. Hot Hot dogs on buns with
all the fixings plus pizza with various toppings for lunch. Kudos to our
food committee, Ann Gelina, Kelli Greer, Alma Reinke. Barbara Pfeil and
all the other club members for their contributions to the food table.
Dinner and fellowship at Paddy Mac’s Irish Pub, where we celebrated
John Rowley’s birthday. After dinner I know some stayed on to the
hear the band.
Sunday: What a difference a day makes
31 boats racing. 6 races for A-fleet (14 total races for regatta), 4 races
for B-fleet (12 total races for regatta)
We had beautiful wind with north, northeast direction. Great windward-leeward
courses with 2 1⁄2 times around the course. A bit higher winds today
than on Saturday. Saw very few A-rigs; it was mostly a B-rig day. Both
fleets did a great job starting with only very few individual recalls.
Some tangles and dismasting, but all boats survived the day. I know for
my part as R/D life was sure a lot better. The final results for the whole
regatta nothing really change at the top of each class.
However the top three finishers in Silver Fleet have a free ride to the
top of A fleet for our next regatta in St. Pete.
Congratulation to both Baron Bremer and Carter Cain for the first place
finishes in Gold and Silver Fleet. This was the first time Baron has ever
won a first in Gold Fleet. Upon the urging of Joe Walter, the traditional
dunking took place for the first time winner. Joe even got a little wet
himself.
