Punta Gorda "Holiday Regatta" Report The Holiday Regatta hosted by the Sun Coast Model Sailing Club was the first stop on the winter circuit for the Florida EC-12 Association. Twenty-one skippers gathered to do battle under beautiful Florida skies with fair winds for the two day event. It had been predetermined that this regatta would use the odd/even scoring system that Sun Coast had been very successful using in other major events; the 2012 US12 Nationals and the recent 2012 Soling Nationals. This was a testing ground for future scoring methods which the Florida Association is exploring. Saturday morning the Northerly winds settled in, 5 to 8 mph, and a good windward, leeward course was set using gates on the downwind legs. Jon Luscomb jumped out to a flying start by knocking four first places in a row and had the other Skippers scratching their heads. As the day progressed the places started to even out. In the early afternoon the winds turned Easterly and because of pond lay out the course could be and was changed to take advantage of the new wind direction. The exact same wind conditions were duplicated on Sunday however the wind speed increased to the 12 to 15 mph range later in the day. By the end of Saturday Alan Perkins had found his way into 1st place, followed closely by Jon Luscomb and Al Dion. Dick Hedderick was in 4th place, Jake Leo 5th, Bob Greer 6th and Fred Pfeil 7th. When the final gun went off Sunday the first three positions stayed the same but Fred bumped Jake, Bob and Dick finishing and taking home the 4th place trophy, Dick finished 5th. Under the odd/even system 32 A & B races were run which equaled a total of 16 races for scoring purposes. While Alan and Jon captured 15 first places between them 12 other skippers also crossed the finish line in first place giving them bragging rights to a first place. What a great way to spend a weekend, a good time was had by all!
