St. Peterburg Regatta Report
by Dee Dudinsky
Saturday was a very very windy day. We went to Pavillion
3 at the south end of the lake, hoping for some protection from the trees.(not).
Bob Brown sold his boat before we started and withdrew from race. The
Gold fleet got in 4 races and the Silver fleet only sailed 2 races, because
of sustained winds in excess of roughly 18 knots, with gusts to 30. After
several demasting and one boat that wanted to visit the other shore --
the vote was to postponed till Sunday. The St Pete Airport had reported
gusts to 47.
We also had 2 first time participants -- Mervin Jones from
Charleston, SC and Don Krippendorf from Parrish, FL
Saturday dinner was at the greek restaurant again. There was 1 person
who had a hard time remebering there was a light fixture above them (5
hits later I think they figured it out). It was a different girl this
year dancing (I didn't hear any complaints).
On Sunday we had 3 no shows (Earl Mills had a prior commitment, John Harrington
didn't make it back, and Jack Wubbe had equipment failure. Lots of rain
early - some gusts. The rest of Sundays races were in 6-10 knots out of
the Northwest. We managed 8 races in Gold fleet and 10 races in Silver
fleet on Sunday for a total of 12 heats for each fleet. Fred Pheil - who
was leading Sat (3 bullets and a 3rd) had a WET radio and couldn't continue.
I want to thank Jackie Mills for the scoresheets and scorkeeping on Saturday.
She had prior commitments on Sunday as well. I also want to thank Ann
Gelina for helping with the finishes through wet and dry on Sunday (she
was a godsend). Thanks also to our 2 guys from Saturday, Fred and John.
I also want to thank Derek Dudinsky for help with setting marks, starts,
finishes and retrival boat.
